Captain Jason “Big Jay” Barnes

Jason “Jay” Barnes was born and raised in the village of Union Springs, New York. He went to grade school at A.J. Smith Elementary School and graduated from Union Springs Central High School. Jay went on to attend college at Cayuga Community College then transferred to Syracuse Environment Science and Forestry at Wanaken (The Ranger School) and graduated with an AAS in Forest Engineering Technology. He then transferred to Alfred State to complete an AAS in Survey Engineering technology.
Jay worked in the surveying field as a technician for 20 years. In the midst of all the schooling and working, Jay never lost the passion for hunting and fishing that his father had ingrained in him from an early age of 5 when he shot his first duck. Three years later, Jay had an opportunity to shoot his first buck. Jay’s and his father hunted and fished together every chance they could. They lived for it!
When Jay got older, his father wasn’t able to go all the time due to health reasons but Jay still wanted to pursue it, so he hunted with his buddies for a few years until they were unable to because of marriages and kids.
Jay’s father said, “You know if people were paying you to take them, I’d bet they would show up to hunt. You are good enough at what you do! You should start guiding.” So Jay did.
Jay got his guides license in 2000 then stepped it up a notch and got his U.S.C.G. Master Captains License in 2006, the year Jay’s dad passed away. Jay has been guiding now for over 20 years!
Frontenac Fowlers guides mainly on Cayuga Lake but travels certain times of the year to wherever the birds are or where the fish are hitting.
